![]() I don’t have the resources to setup Jenkins on my VPS, but Unity comes with this nice feature called Cloud Build. So for Cuby Road I also wanted to have a build system like what I got used to. And although it took some time to configure the build server properly for three platforms, and to create a scalable system on the Unity side, it still saves us programmers from interruptions in what we do best. All the signing of the apps with their certificates was nicely done and an automated upload to HockeyApp was the final request we asked from our build butler. We set up a nice pipeline with SVN, Unity, XCode and MSBuild. And such events always happen at the moment one has almost solved this complex bug or feature in ones head, of which the solution collapses like a house of cards… sigh.įor the Elevator Game I took the approach to instruct Jenkins from the first day on. Without a good working build pipeline it is the software developer who has to build it on its own machine when an event like that occurs. But in the end it saves us developers a lot of work when the project manager suddenly decides a build has to be made available to the client, or the test team needs to have the latest version on all their Apple, Android and Windows Phone devices. But when all the configuration is done, we mainly don’t look at it anymore and we can rely on it to deliver us the builds we need, just like the butler working silently, but with precision and care.Īn upgrade of XCode can be required, or we have to change some configurations due to something like a new feature we want to use. Jenkins is like the butler its name sort of feels like – and of course I’m influenced by their logo, but that aside – the machine does its job, but you have to give it proper instructions to achieve what you want, as a butler also has to know precisely what his boss requires. ![]() Setting up a build pipeline.Īt my day job we put our build server, Jenkins, to good use. It is one of those tasks in software development which are not the most glamorous, and at first glance don’t seem to be valuable, but in the end can make a huge difference.
